Note: This calculator does not include additional monthly compensation for qualified dependents. If your combined rating is 30% or higher, you may be eligible for increased payments based on your marital status, dependent children, or dependent parents. These amounts vary and are not reflected here. Refer to your VA award letter or the official compensation tables for full eligibility and amounts.

If you have more than one service-connected condition, your total VA disability rating is not calculated by simply adding the percentages together. Instead, the VA uses a method called combined rating math, also known as whole body math. This formula applies each additional rating to the portion of the body that remains unaffected, which reduces the impact of each new rating.

For example, if you have a 50% rating and receive a second 30% rating, the result is not 80%. Instead, the combined rating would be 65%, based on how the VA calculates percentages using its standardized formula.

This calculator applies that same method to help you estimate your total combined disability percentage. Just enter each of your individual ratings below to see your calculated result.

If your combined rating is lower than expected, you are not alone. Many veterans are surprised by how the VA calculates multiple ratings using the combined rating formula. In some cases, the result reflects what is currently documented in the file. In others, the outcome may be influenced by missing medical evidence, conditions that were not fully evaluated, or claims that lacked sufficient clinical detail. A review of your record can help clarify how your ratings were determined based on VA criteria.

Certain rating levels such as 30%, 50%, 70%, or 100% may affect eligibility for additional types of compensation. These can include dependent pay, Special Monthly Compensation, Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU), or secondary service-connected conditions. These factors are considered separately from your combined rating and depend on the specific details of your medical and service history. Understanding how the VA applies its standards may help explain the outcome you received.
